What does an optometrist check during an eye exam?
During an eye exam, an optometrist checks both your vision and the overall health of your eyes. This typically includes a visual acuity test to assess how clearly you see, a refraction test to determine your prescription, and evaluations of eye muscle function and pupil response. They’ll also check intraocular pressure (for glaucoma), inspect the front of the eye using a slit lamp, and examine the retina and optic nerve to detect issues like cataracts, macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. Additional tests may be done based on your age, symptoms or medical history.
How often should I have my eyes tested?
For most adults, it's recommended to have an eye test every two years. However, some people may need more frequent check-ups. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, have a family history of eye conditions, or have health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure, your optometrist may suggest annual exams. Children and older adults also benefit from regular eye tests to monitor vision development and age-related changes. Always follow your optometrist’s advice on how often to return based on your individual needs.
Can optometrists detect other health problems?
Yes, in some cases, optometrists can detect signs of health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure and some neurological conditions through eye exams. They may refer you to a GP or specialist for further investigation if they notice anything unusual during the screening process.
